How To Make Brown Butter: An Easy Step-By-Step Tutorial

Brown butter in a glass bowl

This is the simple method of butter browning in a small saucepan until it reaches a golden brown. Once it reaches that point, you can use it in cookies, cakes, on top of popcorn, or just about anything you can think of.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 stick of butter (or whatever amount you need)

Instructions

  1. Place the butter in a skillet on medium heat.
  2. Cook the butter, stirring often until there are brown specks that begin to float up through the foam.
  3. Remove from the heat and pour into a heat-safe container and use in your recipe.

Notes

The butter will go through several stages, including foaming up, bubbling, and separating.

Once you see the brown specks start to bubble up, it is done cooking.

Be sure to stay with the butter the entire time as it will burn fast.
